The Salvation Army Penang Childrens Home is organizing an Open Day on 3rd September 2011.

This year, our target is to raise RM100K to help fund our work in Penang in the residential care, daycare service, community services , youth hostel, emergency relief work.










We pledged the public, friends, donors and sponsor to help us meet our target objective. You are welcome to offer your help selling our coupon, setting up stores, fund raising programme, store helper, store sponsor, etc.

Open Day 2010

28th August 2010, Open Day was held at PCH. The events started since early 7am where many of the stall holders came and setup their stall. By 8am, more stall holders came and many people help to organized the running of the open day.

Penang Chief Minister secretary, Mr Ng arrived at 8:30am. He was accompanied by Major Kamala, Capt Harry, Capt Tan to the event site. Mr Ng represent Chief Minister for this event who is unable to attend due to other appointment.

By, 9am, the event was started with a speech from Mr Ng followed by Capt Harry, Major Kamala and Capt Tan. An opening dance were held by the PCH boys. Then it was followed by the open ceremony with a balloon piecing from Mr Ng and all TSA officers.

Many of public give their support towards the event and came and join the purchase of food, items, etc using their purchased tickets. By 12:15pm many of the stall food, items are sold out. The event was continue until 2pm on the same day.

We want to thank all of those who came and involved in succeeding this event. A big thanks also to the donors, public and friends of the Salvation Army. May God Bless the fund raise and use it to the fullness to help the needy.

About Us

The Salvation Army in Malaysia is in the business of changing lives. We serve God through helping mankind. Our motto is "Heart To God, Hand To Man".

The Salvation Army made its entrance to Malaya in July, 1938. Adjutant Frederick Harvey set up the first Army centre in a vacated YMCA building in Penang. He went on to establish a free school on the island for hundreds of poor children, building upon William Booth's mission to break cycles of poverty. Over the next ten years the The Salvation Army opened up corps and children's homes in Ipoh, Melaka, Batang Melaka and Kuching.

Today The Salvation Army in Malaysia has ten corps and a range of social service programmes that provide both spiritual guidance and practical assistance to people in need. The Army has continued its residential care work with young people and has developed a range of services such as homes for the elderly, day care centres, kindergartens and community service centres.

The Salvation Army in Malaysia is part of the Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Territory with its Headquarters in Bishan, Singapore.

History

From its humble beginning at Logan Road in 1938, the children's home has moved to various places – Combe Hill in Glugor, Sungai Pinang in Jelutong and finally in 1979 to a mansion at 8A Logan Road. In 1991 the home was declared unsafe. The following year, it was pulled down to make way for the construction of a new purpose – built home for boys. This four storey complex was opened on 29 June 1996 by the Chief Minister of Penang. It became known as the new Children’s Home. During the interim period, the children's were housed in a bungalow at Jalan Pantai Molek.


The new children’s home has facilities for non-residential programmes. Many children delight in returning home to their families. The Salvation Army’s mission has always been the family. Through professional social counseling, social workers have been able to work with families at home, thus offering a new service in the form of day care for children who are at risk and who needs protection when parents are at work.








The Salvation Army Penang is most well known expression of social services in the island with the residential care for Children's at Logan Road. Hundreds of children's who have come through the home have found love under the care of the officers, some of whom have left the comforts of their homeland. Some have graduated from local and foreign universities while others have become successful in business and professional circles. The children's have found a place in the society.

Funding

The Salvation Army, being a non-profit organisation, is largely dependent on the goodwill of the public to sustain its social service programmes.Financial donations to our Social Fund qualify for tax-deductible status receipts.

Our sources of funding from public are:



1. Annual Open Day
Every year, the children's home will organize an Open Day as part of its funding programme. During Open Day, stalls are set up selling food, drinks, souvenirs, clothing, etc to raise funds. As part of this effort, coupons are sold to members of the public, friends, donors or sponsors. We gratefully welcome both Corporations or Individuals who wish to sponsor our stalls or donate funds towards this event.

2. Flag Day
As with other organizations, The Salvation Army also organizes a Flag Day annual event to raise funds for our programmes in and around Penang. Children from the Home as well as volunteers will go around with tin cans collecting donations and giving out small tokens of flag tickets bearing our logo.

3. Christmas Appeal
During the Christmas season, our children and volunteers can be seen at shopping complexes with the Christmas Kettle. Passers-by are invited to drop a donation into the kettle in return for a calendar or small flag token.

4. Chinese New Year Appeal
Annually during the Chinese New Year period, we will send out mailing appeals to our donors, sponsors and members of the public for funding. We are blessed with funding coming from various communities in Penang.

5. Family Thrift Store (Charity Shop)
Used, leftover or second-hand goods donated to The Salvation Army are sold through our Family Thrift Store (also known as Charity Shop), and funds are then channelled back into The Salvation Army. (While some goods donated are distributed directly to the needy, it is not logistically or economically possible to give away all donated goods.) This in turn enables us to assist those who are in need in an effective and organized manner.

6. Major Donors
We also recognise and honour individuals, institutions, corporations, foundations, trusts and associations whose annual gift of RM5,000 or more have contributed to supporting our social welfare services.

7. Will & Bequests
We are grateful to those who have remembered The Salvation Army in their will and bequeathed sums of money, property, possession, etc to our us. These bequests will be effectively channelled into our programmes to help as many as of those in need of help as possible.

Other source of income:
1. A small number of our programmes and services are supported by Federal and State government grants. We would like to thank the Malaysian government for their help in this area.
